Patriots Day is for anyone that loves historical events, and who wants to get a behind-the-scenes look at a memorable manhunt in modern American history. On April 15, 2013 Boston, Massachusetts held their annual Boston Marathon. This notorious event hosted athletes from all over the world that would compete in a city-wide marathon. However, an act of terrorism would change the city forever.
The Tsarnaev brothers conducted a strategic plot that caused destruction and chaos at the finish line. Patriots Day does a great job breaking down the day of Police Sgt. Tommy Saunders, played by Boston’s own Mark Wahlberg. This movie is a thriller from beginning to end. Wahlberg brings his A-List acting and hometown flavor to a Boston pride production.
For those who were personally affected by these acts of terrorism might have mixed feelings depending on their own personal views, and that’s ok. The one takeaway that everyone can get from this movie is that if you intentionally cause harm to our country, we will find you. Terrorism will never go unanswered in America and Patriots Day does a fantastic job displaying the integrity of both local and federal law enforcement throughout the film.
Peter Berg, who is the director, is notorious for thrillers involving law enforcement, and Patriots Day does not disappoint, including a supporting cast that features J.K. Simmons and Michelle Monaghan. There are a lot of graphic images from the real-life incident that can bring haunting memories, but those bring even more intensity and emotion.
I believe Patriots Day is suitable for anyone looking for an action and fast paced thriller. One that brings justice to well deserving individuals. It may not be considered a family film, but anyone can learn how strong one city and even a country can unite when facing a difficult time. The 2 hours and 13 minutes it will take to watch this movie in its entirety, will be well worth it.
Until next time.
